This class is for students who are interested in building and honing art skills. They will be challenged to try a variety of 2D and 3D media, to express themselves artistically, and to practice at home through weekly sketchbook assignments.
I offer new projects each year so students can continue taking the class year after year, steadily improving their skills.
For this year's Art History, we will explore pieces featured at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum in Winona, where we will visit on a field trip in the spring. I love exploring Art History with students at this level! My purpose in having students become familiar with great works of art is singular: that someday, when they come across that piece of art, they will have a joyful moment of recognition, like glimpsing a favorite celebrity in the grocery store! I tell them it's my little gift to them for their future enjoyment!
For high school transcripts, each semester is worth .5 credit of studio art and .25 credits of art history. Weekly homework includes sketchbook assignments, occasionally some internet research, and art appreciation videos or short reading selections. Homework is required for high school credit and optional for middle schoolers, though the assignments will definitely help them improve skills and enrich their understanding of art, so most younger students complete the homework.
Supplies include Koi watercolors, Canson watercolor pad, Royal & Langnickel brushes, drawing pencil set, micron pen, and sketchbook. They may order an optional but recommended 36-pencil set of Prismacolor colored pencils. Each student will need their own set for their weekly homework, and will keep them. They will be used year to year for kids who repeat the class.
Required set (one per student): $85 (includes tax) Recommended Prismacolor colored pencils: $25 (includes tax)
You may pay per year, per semester, or on a monthly basis. Registration requires a $25 non-refundable deposit. Space is limited to 15 per class and typically fill quickly.
