Prep for next week: Find a close-up photo of an animal that you would like to draw with colored pencil. Use searches like "animal portrait photography" and "animal photography images." Print the picture in colored ink and full size, or email it to me to print. Make sure the resolution is good so that you can see the textures and values of the photo. You can use a phone or tablet during class if you prefer. Here are a few student art pieces from past years...
Sketchbook Assignment: Recreate the ring pop photo as accurately as possible with colored pencils. Choose white, gray, or black paper. Draw a square that is 4x4, 5x5, or 6x6 inches in the middle of your paper and sketch the ring pop inside the square. Use a ruler if you'd like. Carefully notice the shapes within the shape and pay attention to their hue (color) and value (light/dark.) Pay attention to edges. Are they sharp and crisp, or are they soft and blended? Have fun!
Art Appreciation Assignment: Watch this short video about artist Paul Klee's exhibit at the Tate Museum. We will talk more about his art work next week. He is one of the artists who has a piece of art at the Minneapolis Institute of Art where we're going on our field trip in May.
