We will be starting our Flapdoodles annual contest art this week, and this time, we will be using acrylic paints on canvas. Last year, we did printmaking, and we have also done clay and other media in the past. Acrylic paint is really fun because of the high amount of detail we can create. You can even add thickener to it to get more texture.
Please do some online research on "ice cream art" to get a feel for the style you want to create. Will it be loose and abstract, highly detailed, composed from an interesting perspective, plain background or not? Here are a few examples to show you what I mean. You won't be copying the painting, just choosing the style. Print it out if you think it will help you. (I ALWAYS print out reference pictures for myself.)
After you've decided on a style, look for 1-5 reference photos (not artwork, PHOTOGRAPHY) that will help you sketch your design. Print them out or send them to me to print if you don't have access to a color printer. Send them to me at least a day before class, please! I will have a few pictures on hand if you forget, but you'll have more fun if you pick out the images. You can even search "Flapdoodles photos" to find a design directly from them. Email me if you have questions.
SKETCHBOOK ASSIGNMENT
Divide a page into 6 equal sections with a ruler. Choose one small object and draw it from different angles. Shade it using several of your graphite pencils.

Which painting reminds you most of somewhere you have been? 3. Which painting did you have the strongest reaction to? 4. Which painting least deserved to be in the Top 12? 5. Which painting would be the most fun to recreate in chalk pastel? 6. Which painting would you give to one of your friends because you think he or she would like it?
