Draw a wide rectangular border on your page with a ruler. Design a drawing of your choice. Ocean-themed drawings work well, but it can be anything you're interested in...plants, fantasy, people, cars, etc. Use reference photos to help you draw.
You should have a main subject that is large and then smaller details. The main subject should extend beyond the border. Use a micron/sharpie to outline and add shading with stipple and crosshatching.
Add color with watercolors or colored pencils. Fully color your main subject and everything inside the border. Leave most of the border uncolored. See examples.
ART APPRECIATION ASSIGNMENT:
Watch this video of "dessert artist" Wayne Thiebaud. This is one of my favorite artist stories of all time! Questions: 1. What art movement was becoming popular at the time that allowed Theibaud's art to be a success? 2. If you were forced to devote your artistic life to one subject, what would it be? 3. What are three adjectives that you would use to describe his artwork? 4. What are three adjectives you would use to describe Wayne Thiebaud as a person? 5. If you had been a gallery owner in New York, do you think you would have been one to say "No" to the artist or one who would see the beauty of the paintings and say "Yes"? Why?
