Positive/Negative Space Drawings
One helpful tip when drawing from observation is to learn to see the negative space.
Draw a 5x7 inch rectangle border in your sketchbook using a ruler. Next draw the plant on the left (or choose your own plant reference), filling the rectangle you just drew. Split the space with a lightly drawn line. Use a pencil to shade one side, and use your thicker sharpie to color in the negative space on the other side, like shown in the examples.
