Find an object in your house that would be interesting to draw. Try setting it on a table in a dim room with a desk light shining on one side. Sketch it and then shade it with highlights, mid tones, and deep shadows. This is called "chiaroscurro," which you'll hear more about in the Art Appreciation video. You might want to watch that first.
This teapot was done with charcoal on gray paper, but you can get a similar effect with a variety of pencils on white paper. Notice how dark the shadow is.
If you don't want to fill the whole page in your sketchbook, you can draw a 6x6 square and make your drawing inside the frame.
